About Dean’s career
Dean Corbett is a specialist in laser vision correction (laser eye surgery for long and short
sightedness and astigmatism), Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL) for people unsuitable for
LASIK and also Refractive Cataract Surgery utilising aspheric, toric and multifocal IOL’s.
All this means he is able to advise on laser procedures for sight correction as well as other
microsurgical techniques to enable patients to optimise their visual potential and functioning.
He also specialises in presbyopia (near vision) correcting surgery, glaucoma surgical care,
cataract and iris reconstruction. He is also a recognised Glaucoma surgeon, having
completed a fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
Dean has been instrumental in the introduction of new devices and surgical techniques for the
improvement of vision. In 2000, he was an early user of Multifocal IOL’s for those undergoing
cataract surgery. He also implanted one of the first Rayner Toric IOL’s in New Zealand for the
correction of high corneal astigmatism and was the first to become a regular user of the ICL,
a special intraocular lens for the correction of extreme focusing errors. His most recent foray
into new devices is the Acufocus inlay, a small wafer thin disc inserted into the cornea, to
improve near vision and decrease dependency on reading glasses.
He also holds a position as consultant ophthalmologist in the public sector in South Auckland
at Manukau Super Clinic, is a Clinical Lecturer and provides training to New Zealand Ophthalmic
registrars. Dean has affiliations with several Ophthalmology, Cataract and Refractive Societies
and Colleges in New Zealand, Australia and the USA and has also lectured and presented at
a number of seminars and meetings nationally and internationally.
About Dean
Ophthalmology as a specialty was an obvious choice for Dean. In his youth, he worked for many
years as an engraver, developing a passion for the perfection, attention to detail and challenges
that ophthalmology provides. In Dean’s words “Foremost in my enthusiasm for ophthalmology
is the ability to permanently correct problems. Few, if any, surgical specialties can offer such a
complete and permanent solution to a medical problem. In ophthalmology there is also an ever
expanding array of treatments which in many cases can make a patient’s vision better than it has
ever been in their life!”
About his work at Manukau Superclinic, where he primarily treats glaucoma conditions, he says
“this adds a further dimension to my work. Here I see a great range of people; from the
farmer from Pukekohe to the refugee from Afghanistan. This is a humbling challenge which
certainly puts things into perspective”.
Outside of ophthalmology, Dean’s family is very important to him. He says his wife Tina has been
incredibly supportive of his professional development and “has been the backbone of my career”.
He especially enjoys seeing his children, James (16) and Genevieve (13) grow and achieve in
their academic, sporting and artistic careers and they all share interests in tennis, hockey, golf,
boating, diving and music.
