Auckland Eye was chosen as one of four finalists to present for the Baxter Sustainability Award 2018

On the 10th of April, Sara Van Tilburg presented Auckland Eye’s sustainability Initiatives to the NZPSHA (New Zealand Private Surgical Hospitals Association) meeting.

Auckland Eye's Sustainability Initiatives:

Auckland Eye made a commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing sustainable choices when it built its new clinic building in  Auckland in 2015/16. It took many measures to create a sustainable building through onsite rain water tanks, planting of native trees, waste and recycling systems and low impact storm water systems. There was a keenness to push the company even further in sustainable practices by creating an effective waste, water and energy management plan that would be easily understood and fully embraced by all staff. The plan also included sustainable procurement.

To turn Auckland Eye’s sustainability vision into a reality, a project team was put together which included staff from both the clinic and the surgical centre who were passionate about environmental sustainability and were already proactive about reducing the impact on the environment.

An overall strategy with some key focus areas were agreed on which included waste management, purchasing eco-friendly products, water and electricity usage reduction. Waste Management implementation was designed to reduce our landfill volumes. The team worked together to remove all under desk waste bins and replaced them with desk cubes. Also, so that the waste could be better managed, the team have installed segmented bins in the staff kitchen areas; providing a bin each for recycling, composting and landfill waste.

To focus on the reduction of electricity usage, the team have been reminding staff to turn off lights, computers and screens when not in use. The team changed the automation of the air conditioning units so they were only on in the clinic during business hours Monday to Friday. Additionally, the team changed the products that Auckland Eye were purchasing to include eco-friendly cleaning products and carbon neutral stationary options.

Good work Sara and the team! Keep it up!
