Dry Eye can result in varying symptoms or levels of discomfort. You may experience sensitivity to light, blurred vision, a burning sensation or discomfort in windy or dry conditions.

There are two main forms of Dry Eye and it's important to establish which you are experiencing in order to effectively diagnose the cause of your Dry Eye.

Evaporative Dry Eye is caused by blockage of the meibomian glands. The limited secretion of oil by these glands leads to quick evaporation of tears. Poor or insufficient oil layer may lead to tears evaporating 4-16 times faster than normal.

The second form of Dry Eye is not related to tear quality, rather it is caused by eyelid and skin inflammation.

During your comprehensive initial assessment we will measure the quality of your tears and the health of your meibomian glands to determine the reason for your Dry Eye.

We may take a tiny sample of your tears using a Tearlab machine in order to measure your osmolarity (the saltiness of your tears), and we may also undertake a LipiView® evaluation to understand more about your tear film.

Lastly, we may perform a Meibomian Gland evaluation that determines if your glands are blocked or obstructed in any way.

Following your assessment you will be given a tailored treatment plan. During your treatment you will have access to proven, state-of-the-art dry eye technology, including LipiFlow® and Lumenis Optima IPL, and your treatment will be provided by our expertly trained clinical team.

  • Do not use eye gels the night before or on the day of testing.
  • Do not use dry eye drops the day of testing
  • Do not use eye medications less than two hours before testing (i.e. glaucoma medication)
  • Do not wear contact lens the days of testing. However, it's ok to wear contact lens after testing is complete.
  • Do not wear eye make up, facial moisturisers or lotions on the day of testing.
  • Do not directly rub or touch your eyes for two hours prior to testing.

LipiFlow® is a procedure designed to treat the root cause of Evaporative Dry Eye, which are blocked Meibomian glands. Opening and clearing these glands can allow them to resume natural production of lipids (oils) needed for healthy tears.

LipiFlow® uses an Activator eyepiece to apply precisely controlled heat to the inner eyelid to encourage your body to restart the natural production of lipds (oils) needed for healthy tears.

It's single use design and built-in sensors ensure a safe, sterile treatment.

Sometimes Dry Eye is caused by eyelid and skin inflammation and in this case, we may suggest the Lumenis Optima IPL. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and it is a technology that is used for various skin treatments beyond those related to the eyes.

The Optima IPL is a revolutionary treatment that is gentle and effective, treating skin and eyelid inflammation with maximum safety, comfort and customisation to your skin type and condition.

During the Optima IPL treatment, light pulses penetrate the tissue to create heat. This targets the abnormal blood vessels that are the root cause of inflammation.

The body's natural response to the treatment removes the abnormal vessels and heals the inflammation affecting the skin and eyelids. An extra benefit of the Optima IPL is that it also improves the appearance of the skin while treating your eyelid inflammation.

The cost of your initial assessment which will include as required a tear osmolarity test, LipiView test, Corneal staining and a questionnaire is $185 (incl gst).

The cost of treatment varies depending on your specific treatment requirements. For more information contact us on oasisspa@aucklandeye.co.nz or 0800 25 53 93.
