About Bia’s career
Dr Bia Kim is an anterior segment specialist with expertise across a broad spectrum of eye conditions, from ocular surface disease to intraocular reconstruction.
Her career in ophthalmology began with a research studentship at the University of Otago, under the guidance of Associate Professor Gordon Sanderson. That early curiosity in the delicate complexity of the eye quickly grew into a lifelong passion for preserving sight. Bia went on to complete a clinical research fellowship in cornea and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) focused on cataract surgery, mentored by Professor Charles McGhee.
Bia pursued advanced subspecialty training in Auckland, gaining expertise in corneal transplantation and complex cataract surgeries. This was complemented by further experience at renowned eye centres in Seoul, Cologne, London, and Kanazawa. Along the way, Bia was awarded several scholarships supporting her commitment to excellence.
Bia values up-to-date and evidence-based care. She has contributed to over 20 peer-reviewed publications and received multiple awards for her conference presentations. She is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Auckland and a consultant at Manukau SuperClinic, where she enjoys teaching and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
About Bia
Patients and colleagues alike value Bia’s warm demeanor and composure, even through the toughest situations. She offers clear guidance and modern treatment options that reflect each person’s lifestyle and goals.
“It’s incredibly humbling and a privilege to be trusted with someone’s sight. My aim is for patients to feel heard, informed, and confident in their care.”
Between life as an ophthalmologist and a mum, Bia loves to explore. From hunting out local cuisine to trekking in the Himalayas, she finds inspiration in new experiences. A fan of both practical problem-solving and creative design, she jokes that if she weren’t an eye surgeon, she’d be curating designer furniture.
Bia is happy to consult in English and Korean.
