What is the difference between our laser vision correction options?

A computer-guided femtosecond laser creates a precise lens shaped disc (a lenticule) of tissue within the cornea, and a keyhole incision to remove it. The shape of the lenticule is customised to correct your vision.

Fastest and latest generation of vision correction treatment available.

Minimally invasive: as it is only a small incision – no flap and 100% blade free.

No flap: the risk of flap related complications is lower. (e.g. flap detachment, flap displacement, infection, dry eyes) Minimal discomfort during and after procedure.

Rapid recovery: SMILE offers a faster recovery compared to PRK.

Suited for many: patients with dry eyes or contact lens intolerance can benefit from SMILE PRO (those who are less suited to other procedures).

Availability: not all ophthalmology clinics offer SMILE Pro – but Auckland Eye does!

Not yet suitable for long-sightedness or very low levels of short-sightedness.

SMILE Pro surgery: $3,200 per eye; $6,400 both eyes.

A femtosecond laser creates microscopic bubbles under the surface of the cornea to create a flap. The surgeon gently lifts this flap, and then uses an excimer laser to reshape the exposed area below, before smoothing the flap back into position.

Quick results: typically, rapid visual improvement and recovery, often within hours.

Minimal discomfort: most experience little discomfort during and after procedure.

Extensive experience: has been the standard treatment for over 20 years.

Wide applicability: suitable for a broad range of vision problems.

Potential risk of flap related complications (e.g. flap detachment, flap displacement, infection, dry eyes).

LASIK surgery: $3,200 per eye; $6,400 both eyes.

The most superficial corneal layer is removed so that the underlying corneal tissue can be reshaped with an excimer laser.

Versatility: suitable for patients with thin or irregular corneas.

No flap: the risk of flap related complications is lower. (e.g. flap detachment, flap displacement, infection, dry eyes).

High impact: if your career or lifestyle involves high-impact activities, PRK may be the best choice.

Longer recovery period compared to LASIK and SMILE.

More discomfort compared to LASIK and SMILE.

Potential side effect of milky or blurry vision – haze.

PRK surgery: $3,200 per eye; $6,400 both eyes.

This is an advanced LASIK treatment that transcends conventional blended vision / monovision methods by increasing the depth of field of each eye, offering a range of vision at all distances: near, intermediate, and far.

The procedure is LASIK, with Presbyond serving as a complementary enhancement to meet specific requirements.

Same benefits as LASIK.

Gives improved binocular vision over all distances compare to monovision.

Can be reversed with the use of glasses.

Same limitations as LASIK.

May be difficult to adapt to new vision (could potentially take up to 3 months). For this reason, all our Presbyond LASIK patients are required to undertake a contact lens simulation prior to the laser surgery to ensure their visual system adapts.
