About Taras's career

Dr Taras Papchenko graduated from Auckland Medical School in 2002. He then developed a keen interest in Ophthalmology upon completion of two years as House Officer in the hospitals of Auckland and Waikato regions.

He has spent three years as Glaucoma and Optic Nerve Research Fellow at the University of Auckland during which time he published a number of scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and worked on his PhD thesis. Taras was awarded a PhD in Ophthalmology in 2013 from the University of Auckland.

After completing his Ophthalmology training in New Zealand, he spent two and a half years in the United Kingdom sub-specialising in the areas of Oculoplastic surgery and Neuro-Ophthalmology.

Taras has recently returned to Auckland to work as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in Greenlane Clinical Centre. He maintains his connection to ophthalmic research and remains an honorary senior lecturer with the University of Auckland. He continues to present at international ophthalmic meetings and is also reviewer for several peer-reviewed scientific journals.

About Taras

As a hobby Taras has been involved in figure skating since an early age, and even competed in regional championships before his passion for medicine and scientific discovery took over. However, despite his busy schedule as a doctor, he managed to maintain his interest in the sport and has been coaching ice skating for many years at the ice skating rinks at Avondale and Botany Downs.
