Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults, affecting the central part of the retina (the macula) responsible for sharp, detailed vision. While there is currently no cure, there are several ways to slow its progression and preserve your sight for as long as possible. Here’s what you need to know.

Understanding Macular Degeneration

There are two types of age-related macular degeneration (AMD):

  • Dry AMD, the more common form, progresses slowly and is characterised by thinning of the macula.
  • Wet AMD, less common but more severe, involves abnormal blood vessel growth under the macula that can cause sudden vision loss.

Ways to Slow the Progression

1. Stop Smoking
Smoking is one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for AMD. It reduces blood flow to the retina and accelerates damage. Quitting smoking at any stage can greatly reduce the risk of AMD progression.

2. Eat a Nutrient-Rich Diet
A nutrient-rich diet, especially one that includes green leafy vegetables, fish, and nuts, may help slow the progression of AMD.

A Mediterranean-style diet, which emphasises these foods, has been associated with a reduced risk of AMD progression.

In contrast, diets high in glycaemic load, omega-6 fatty acids, and red or processed meats may contribute to an increased risk of AMD.

3. Manage Chronic Conditions
Conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes can increase the risk of worsening AMD. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, and working with your GP to manage these conditions can reduce the risk of AMD progression.

4. Regular Eye Exams
Routine eye examinations are vital. They allow for early detection of changes in the retina, which means timely intervention and monitoring. For those with existing AMD, regular monitoring with an ophthalmologist is essential to track progression and explore treatment options, especially if wet AMD develops.

Try the Amsler Grid Test at Home

One easy way to monitor your central vision at home is by using the Amsler Grid. This simple tool helps detect changes or distortions in your vision, often a sign that macular degeneration may be progressing.
