You might be surprised at how often Auckland Eye Ophthalmologists are asked if they would have laser vision correction themselves. We understand that usually the reason people ask is so they can determine how safe the procedure is.

To help answer this question we often reference an interesting study conducted in the United States. It was carried out to find out how many eye surgeons who perform laser vision correction (refractive surgeons) would undergo the procedure themselves and also recommend it to their immediate family members. The study was based on 250 refractive surgeons (248 responded to the survey) and here are some key points that were discovered;

  • Refractive surgeons  know more about laser vision correction than anybody and are very critical when it comes to risks and benefits.
  • 107 surgeons from this group were suitable for laser vision correction and 96% of them had actually had the procedure done.
  • 95% were completely or mostly satisfied with their outcomes.
  • Over 90% had recommended laser eye surgery to adult members of their immediate family.

Overall, the study showed that refractive surgeons were significantly more likely to have laser vision correction for  their own eyes than the general public, a very heartening statistic we believe for anyone thinking about having the procedure done.
